Ferragudo

Clube Rio, Ferragudo, Algarve

This lovely ground floor apartment overlooks the beach and the sea across to Portimao. Built on a hill the entrance is above alongside the parking. An entry phone, down two flights of stairs through the communal area, brings you to the apartment. The apartment has a terrace overlooking the walk-in swimming pool, directly above the beach. From here there are also fabulous views of the estuary and the Moorish castle. The interior is compact and practical and both the open-plan living/dining room and the bedroom have floor to ceiling sliding windows to the terrace and pool area. In our opinion, some of the best fish restaurants are in Ferragudo – you can sit on the quay and watch the fishermen return with their catch then watch your chosen fish being grilled. Ferragudo is a magnet for artists and there are several galleries in the village.

Walk directly from the Club’s pool and gardens to the beach or to Ferragudo village. Take a water taxi from Jose Mourinho’s, best loved Sudouest Restaurant, to the far side of the river for a romantic meal in Portimao.

Ferragudo is smaller and more traditional than it’s neighbour, Portimão which is located across the river estuary of the Rio Arade. The main cobbled square, Praça Rainha Dona Leonor has lots of café’s serving delicious pastries and a variety of different types of coffee. Just around the corner is the quayside with lots of fish restaurants of varying prices serving the freshest of fish, barbequed in front of your eyes. At one end of the village is the impressive Fort of São João de Arade. It began life in the 15th century as a lookout tower and then was extended in 17th/18th century as part of the fortifications protecting the mouth of the river. (On the opposite bank above Portimão marina is the fort of Santa Catarina.). At the beginning of the 20th century it was converted into a private home by the poet, Coelho Carvalho which is how it came by it’s present, rather romantic, appearance.
